To mark the change in the seasons, as post-harvest festival , Makara Sankaranthi is celebrated on the 14th January every year. As a gesture of gratitude, the vegetables and rice which are harvested as offerings to God and worships are done in a grand manner. This festivals is considered to be very auspicious for the people of Bangalore as it marks the beginning of warmer and longer days as compared to nights.
The preparations for Makar Sankranti start at least one week before the festival and you can see decorations in everybody’s house reflecting their happiness on a good harvest done. As this festival is all about inviting a new season, there are reunions of friends and families. They share their time with the delicacies specially prepared for this occasion. People conduct special poojas praying for a life ahead with full of purity, knowledge and wisdom.
